Progressive done right. Happy New Year!

This track reminds me of old trance – takes me back to 2004, and how good vocal trance was back then. MaRLo did such a great job. I’ve only posted this version, instead of the long original mix, because I actually like the video! Takes me away, on a far away beach…

Top 20 of 2011 Highlights

I’d like to take a second and just talk about some of the tracks in the top 20, as voted by listeners of A State of Trance.

20. Armin van Buuren feat. Laura V – Drowning (Avicii Remix)

A beautiful track and a great set opener. No wonder it’s the first track. Its perfect spot, and I really don’t think it’s the votes that got it there. If we take a look back, at Top 20 of 2009, we’ll see another great set opener “See The Sun”, which I’m sure didn’t just happen to be the 20th most voted track. Nonetheless, great tunes.

18. Emma Hewitt – Colours (Armin van Buuren Remix)

An epic from Emma Hewitt and Armin van Buuren. A really good remix, and Emma’s voice is brilliant as always – you’ll see another track featuring her vocals as we move on. Overall, a beautiful track to listen to and it truly deserves its spot in the top 20.

16. ATB & Dash Berlin – Apollo Road (Club Mix)

One of the very few non-vocal tracks in this top 20. Good job ATB and Dash Berlin. I really like this track, but it’s a bit monotonous and gets boring not too long after it begins.  I’m not sure it fits well in the top 20 – but hey, it’s not for me to decide.

15. Headstrong feat. Stine Grove – Tears (Aurosonic Progressive Mix)

Moving on, this is one of the greatest vocals tracks this year had to offer, and I was fairly impressed with it – as you can tell per my previous post. Stine Grove is just great! I’ve posted before one of her works with Blue Tente, called “Heading Home”. Calming, beautiful voice. And kudos to Aurosonic for this awesome, and I mean awesome Progressive Mix. Just what I like. So, the first track so far I wished it went higher.

12. Andy Moor feat. Sue McLaren – Fight The Fire (Original Mix)

Another banging tune from Andy Moor. He does what he does best, but that’s just about it. Comparing this track with other tunes I described above, I really think this track has been a bit overrated. I really enjoy it but it doesn’t have that feel of… top 12.

11. Andain – Promises (Myon & Shane 54 Summer Of Love Remix)

And what do we have here? Promises. What many thought to be the Tune of the Year, didn’t even make the top 10. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Myon and Shane 54 live a few months ago, and this tune really goes down well. Banging, the crowd loves it. So, good job Myon and Shane 54. This track deserved a better spot in the top, definitely better than tracks like “Sun and Moon” that was ranked 3rd, etc. I won’t even take the time to talk about that one.

08. Cosmic Gate with Emma Hewitt – Be Your Sound

I skipped a few tracks that I didn’t enjoy so much. So here it is, one of my favorites this year up there with “An Angel’s Love”. As I stated previously, if it’s Emma Hewitt, it must be good. But if there’s Cosmic Gate as well, it becomes an instant classic. This is what this track is, pure bliss. It starts on a smooth tone, a piano, low bass… but damn! What follows is Heaven! So, you gotta appreciate the progression, not only the perfect voice. I wish I had the opportunity to hear this in a club. Good job Cosmic Gate and Emma, I’ll sure keep this on my phone for years to come! 🙂

07. Arty & Mat Zo – Rebound

These two young producers strike again, with what has been a great track altogether. It featured on many big compilations this year, including Armin van Buuren’s A State of Trance 2011 Compilation. A beautiful one indeed.

06. Gaia – Status Excessu D

The long awaited A State of Trance 500 Anthem. While it’s a good track, wonderful progression – Armin doesn’t go wrong with his Gaia alias and didn’t disappoint so far, but this track didn’t even get close in terms of quality to what Sebastian Brandt had to offer for A State of Trance 450 as an anthem. A nice track overall, but I’ll have to question its spot in the top.

05. Orjan Nilsen – Between The Rays

Oh, Orjan Nilsen magic!!! An absolutely incredible track, released in Orjan Nilsen’s debut album, called “In My Opinion”. I strongly recommend everyone go checkout that album. Fair enough, this is top 5. Kudos to Orjan for a great track.

I won’t take the time to talk about the number 4, “Shogun – Skyfire”. I mean we’ve heard those sounds everywhere (Cosmic Gate – Inside of You, etc), and it’s not even that great of a track to be honest. Highly overrated in my opinion. I won’t talk about “Sun and Moon” by Above and Beyond either, which was ranked 3rd. It’s just such a commercial track and it’s not even good.

02. Alex M.O.R.P.H. feat. Sylvia Tosun – An Angels Love (Vocal Mix)

For everyone who voted for this track, you have all my respect and appreciation.  While this is an incredible track, I didn’t think this will make the top 10, simply because it doesn’t have that commercial sound that top tunes usually have; but hey – it even made it to the podium! I really can’t describe how beautiful this is, and how happy I am to see this ranked so high. Good job everyone!

01. Aly & Fila feat. Jwaydan – We Control The Sunlight [Tune Of The Year]

I’m still undecided if I approve this to be the Tune of The Year. While it’s great, uplifting – what Aly and Fila do best, Jwaydan with an amazing voice, it still doesn’t have that something special. Or I didn’t find it yet maybe, but I gave this track enough listens all over the year. Nevertheless, congrats to Aly and Fila!

Thank you for your time.

Just finished listening to ASOT Top 20 of 2011 and I’ll be posting some of the highlights.

Borealis – Wandering Atrial

Something quite different than what you’re used to see on this blog. But hey, this is so great.

It’s Luigi Lusini.
